Ain't No Cure for the Wintertime Blues...

Actually there is but more on that in a minute.

I hate this time of year. Spring is hopeful, summer is warm, autumn in New England is beautiful, the holiday season is exciting, but this time of year is blah. Blah, blah, blah, blah, blaaaaaah. It's cold. It's dark. It's slippery (that's always fun). Between the wood stove in the living room, the sand and salt on the roads and the kids and fuzzy dog that track dirt and ash everywhere, my house is filthy immediately after I clean it (which is  EXTREMELY slightly demoralizing). AND most days it's gray. It's just all-around icky. Unfortunately, my mood usually matches that blah feeling until around the equinox when the sun sticks around longer and it starts to get springy.

It's like I missed the "homo-sapiens aren't allowed to hibernate" memo.

I know that this happens every year. The excitement of Christmas generally gets me to about the middle of January when I get tired, sleepy and bored. Then I "magically" wake up again in March. For some reason though, I forget that this happens each year and I have to feel lousy for a couple of weeks before I take the necessary counter-measures. But counter-measures have been taken and I expect to feel better pretty soon. Monday, I dug out my happy light and I've spent an hour in front of it for two mornings now and I've started taking large amounts of vitamin D. Those are the two main interventions so I should be feeling perky again pretty soon.

So yeah, my enthusiasm has temporarily fled which has caused me to be somewhat absent from the blogosphere. Attempting to do much of anything (like work on projects, make life changes, check off lists) is an exercise in futility until I wake up again. Noreen was very sweet to check in with me so I thought I tell you why I appear to have disappeared.

I'm here. Give me a week of light and vitamins and I'll be showing up even more.

  1. It's raining today and 46 degrees. Gonna be tough for the giant snowbanks of youthful memory to amass in the face of all this blah. Vitamin D is definitely the thing :)

  2. vitamin d is magic! thanks for letting us know, and you are not alone. i love winter - but most people do not. also this winter is so gray but with no snow to make it beautiful, so we have to work harder to find the loveliness. BUT i bet your wood stove looks romantic in the evening, and you're having birthday cake tonight, so some things are wonderful. i send you sunshine and a quick trip to somewhere sunny in your imagination. joy to you!
